A dictionary of images is not just a set sequence showing those places which define the meaning of Emilia-Romagna. It is, rather, one possible way of looking at the multi-layered social and cultural complexity which throughout the centuries has transformed what was once only a geographical entity into a land where man has left his mark: a theatre of thoughts, deeds, emotions. To give a sensible shape to this region is like trying to reduce to a pat definition the depth of human experience which makes up our birthright - the land the people live in and to which they bear witness. The dictionary is thus a way of scrolling trough various pan-shots of the region, whereby the observing eye becomes increasingly more subjective and intimate. Both our geographical and historical vision of the region is coloured by the presence of the human beings who have left their mark in space and time. It is by following characters captured by the camera that we shall discover a land and the life of those who live there
