Istitutions and regional production centre
The Dance Center came into being as Regional Centre in 1991 on the initiative of the Region Emilia-Romagna, ATER and Reggio Emilia City Council. It was the first permanent public body in Italy exclusively dedicated to ballet production (i.e. independent of an opera company), and its remit ranges from producing and promoting to training, study and research. The Dance Center is a repository of the most significant developments in the field of dance at both regional and national levels, as testified by Aterballetto and the Advanced training course for young dancers and choreographers. Aterballetto is the leading dance company producing and distributing ballet in Italy. Founded in 1979, it has created a wide repertoire of choreographies since then with specially commissioned works by Amedeo Amodio, who was artistic director until 1996. Other internationally acclaimed choreographers such as Glen Tetley, Alvin Ailey, Lucinda Childs William Forsythe and have also worked with the company. In addition, Aterballetto can boast performance rights of some of the Twentieth Century’s most significant works for dance theatre by artists of the calibre of George Balanchine, Kenneth McMillan, Anthony Tudor, Alvin Ailey, José Limon, Hans Van Manen, Jiri Kyliàn, Léonide Massine, William Forsythe, David Parsons and Maurice Béjart.
ATERBALLETTO is the leading dance company producing and distributing ballet in Italy and was the first permanent dance company in Italy dedicated exclusively to ballet production (i.e. independent of an opera company). A series of top level collaborations with prestigious choreographers, composers, stage and costume designers, painters and actors has consolidated Aterballetto’s reputation for quality over the years. Predominantly formed from solo dancers of an exceptionally high technical standard who are able to alternate in lead roles, Aterballetto also enjoys recognition in the international arena: its productions have been mounted throughout Europe, the United States, South America, the Middle and Far East.
In 1991 Aterballetto became the Regional Dance Centre company, a recognized Body founded by Reggio Emilia City Council, the Emilia-Romagna Region and A.T.E.R. The company operates under the name of ATERBALLETTO and focuses on a series of functions and important work in the area of ballet: production, distribution, training, study and research. Federico Grilli has been president of the company since 1996 and under his direction in 2001 the Regional Dance Centre became DANCE CENTER and in 2003 NATIONAL DANCE FOUNDATION.
The National Dance Foundation is a repository of the most significant developments in the field of dance at both regional and national levels: the Advanced Training Course for Young Dancers, the organization of dance events and exhibitions, dance promotion and distribution schemes aimed at deepening and generating public interest and awareness in this discipline.
Mauro Bigonzetti has been its artistic director since 1997 and it was with Aterballetto, from ’82 to’93, that he began to develop his career as dancer and choreographer, becoming one of the main soloists and taking his first steps in choreography, which led him to work with the most prestigious international Companies.
Aterballetto´s repertoire currently features choreographies by Mauro Bigonzetti, young European choreographers and William Forsythe, Jiri Kyliàn and Itzik Galili.
