ATER

Institutions and regional production centre
ATER
The kaleidoscopic theatre world of
Emilia-Romagna, acknowledged at European level for quality and innovation, is ably represented by the Theatre Association of Emilia Romagna (ATER). Formed of public bodies (the Region, 41 Local Councils,  4 Provinces), 4 theatre organizations in which the regional council has a financial stake and 10 private partners, the association in fact serves the entire regional system, performing theatre distribution, production and management functions, promoting events, training actors, handling information and communications. Initially set up in 1964 to coordinate the Region’s opera productions, in the 1970s it moved into the area of drama programming and the importing and distribution of foreign artists and ensembles. In 1977 it initiated its own production activity forming Emilia-Romagna Teatro for drama and Aterballetto for dance, both of which became autonomous in 1991 under the name “ERT- Emilia Romagna Teatro Fondazione” (the Region’s current permanent theatre company) and “National Dance Foundation”, which includes the Aterballetto company.
Distribution of drama, music and dance is performed both in
Italy and abroad by ATER, which takes care of all aspects of the tour. The quality of the service, which is the fruit of years of experience, has led many well-known artists to entrust ATER with representing them. ATER produces and organizes events and theatrical performances in cooperation with other bodies, both public and private. Among these is the “Mundus” festival, devoted to the music and culture of the world’s five continents.
Many manifestations use the organisational services of ATER, such as the “Parma Danza” dance festival,
the Malatestiana Musical Festival of Rimini, and several televised events, including those dedicated to grand ballet and to the memory of Federico Fellini. ATER organised the concerts of Andrea Bocelli and of La Scala Filarmonica directed by Riccardo Muti during the Olympic Games in Australia.
Professional training, which was first begun in 1993 thanks to a grant to the Region from the European Social Fund,  carried out today through the
“ATER Training Foundation”  now occupies a significant position on the regional landscape and covers several fields: organization, administration, communication, theatre technique, with particular reference to new figures requested by an ever evolving sector from theatre company managers to stage technicians, lighting technicians and theatre administrators. Between 1991 and the present day as many as 963 students took part in specialist and in-service training courses. A Theatre Watchdog group, set up with the help of the Region, also makes it possible to provide updates on financial trends within the sector.
Since 1995 ATER´s chief means of communication has been “Cartellone” (Playbill), the Internet portal covering the Region’s entire entertainments landscape. This constantly updated portal offers visitors all the Region’s theatre calendars, as well as lots of news sections and special reports.
